Neosho Valley Woodworks

"Using antique machinery is like playing extreme sports," says cabinetmaker Pat Haire. "It's more dangerous than modern equipment because of the open belts and gears."

But along with the danger comes romance, says Haire, who restored an 1876 stone carriage and wagon factory in Humboldt.

There he uses mid-19th century woodworking machines powered by century-old electric motors to craft fine period-style furniture and millwork.

"With old machines, nothing is automatic, so you develop a personal connection with the tool."

His only frustration? "I'm constantly sweeping; 19th century shops didn't have exhaust systems."
