Paul David Finney -- Stanford University School of Engineering graduate, U.S. Army officer in Vietnam, and native of Humboldt, Kansas -- tenaciously pursues his dreams. Hence, his vast life experience spans from real estate investment in Florida to being a lobbyist in Washington, D.C. Furthermore, his drive to become an impeccably trained Chinese herbalist and acupuncturist has literally taken him around the world.

Humboldt Roots

A young man in 1885, Paul’s maternal grandfather arrived in Humboldt looking to establish himself. He became an undertaker and furniture merchant with interests in banking, farming, and brick manufacture. His only child, Gertrude, wed Robert Finney, general manager of the Humboldt Brick and Tile Co. and Allen County representative in the Kansas House of Representatives. The statesman and his wife raised Paul and his two siblings in Humboldt.

After years of education and travel, and then living and working in Wichita, Paul felt drawn back to his family roots in Humboldt. He moved his acupuncture practice to the tranquil town and opened a health food store there in 1992. Paul revived his family tradition of proactive service to the Humboldt community, and he is the founding president of the Humboldt Historic Preservation Alliance.

A Dream Realized

Paul’s desire to bring fine dining and hotel accommodations to Humboldt drove him to resurrect the Bailey Hotel. When the Bailey Hotel reopened to an excited public on Dec. 26, 1998, it was the culmination of over three years of planning and construction. Paul tapped into the resources of the Humboldt area for planning, design, skilled labor, and talented artisans to make his dream a reality.

For years since, the Bailey Hotel has invigorated Humboldt and the surrounding region. It has provided the fine dining and hotel accommodations that the wonderful people of Southeast Kansas deserve.
